πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ International Chefs Day β€” October 20

International Chefs Day is celebrated every year on October 20. It recognizes the culinary profession, celebrates chefs and their contributions to society, and emphasizes one of the profession's most important responsibilities: passing culinary knowledge and skills to the next generation. History & Origin

International Chefs Day was established in 2004 through the initiative of Chef Dr. Bill (Billy) Gallagher, a prominent culinary educator and former president of the World Association of Chefs' Societies (WACS), now known as Worldchefs. Worldchefs

Gallagher envisioned the day as more than simply celebrating chefs. He wanted chefs to use their knowledge, experience and influence to educate, inspire and serve their communities, particularly by encouraging young people to develop an appreciation for food and cooking. Worldchefs

The organization behind it

International Chefs Day grew out of the much older international culinary organization now called Worldchefs.

Worldchefs was founded in October 1928 at the Sorbonne in Paris, bringing together chef organizations from around the world. Its founding mission included solidarity among chefs, preservation of culinary arts and international culinary education. Worldchefs

The organization's history helps explain why International Chefs Day focuses so heavily on education, professional development and sharing culinary traditions.

More than a celebration

Over the years, International Chefs Day has developed into a global platform for chefs to:

  • πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Celebrate the culinary profession

  • πŸŽ“ Teach and mentor aspiring chefs

  • 🌎 Share food traditions and cultures

  • πŸ₯• Promote healthy eating

  • ♻️ Encourage sustainability and responsible food practices

  • 🀝 Give back to communities

  • πŸ‘§πŸ½πŸ‘¦πŸ½ Introduce children to cooking and food education

Worldchefs describes the day as an opportunity for chefs to use their skills for the good of others, rather than simply celebrating the profession itself. Worldchefs

International Chefs Day today

The day has become a truly global observance. In 2024, the 20th anniversary campaign involved chefs and communities in more than 100 countries, with 279 events involving 5,865 chefs and young chefs and reaching nearly 150,000 children. Worldchefs

For 2026, Worldchefs is continuing its Food Explorers campaign, encouraging children to learn about ingredientsβ€”where food comes from, how it is grown or harvested, and why those choices matter for health and sustainability. Worldchefs

The bigger meaning for chefs

At its heart, International Chefs Day recognizes that being a chef is about more than preparing food.

A chef can be a:

Teacher β†’ Mentor β†’ Storyteller β†’ Cultural ambassador β†’ Leader β†’ Community builder

Every recipe taught, apprentice mentored, tradition preserved and meal shared helps keep the culinary profession moving forward.

And that's perhaps the most important message of International Chefs Day:

A chef's greatest legacy isn't just the food they createβ€”it's the knowledge and passion they pass on.

October 20 is a day to celebrate the chefs who feed us, teach us, inspire us and help shape the future of food.
